BLINK 👀 By GAUTAM K MIRCHANDANI✍️
SAM
ROY was
the perfect example of the Great Indian Liberation Process. At the age of
forty-nine, he was the Vice-President of a Multi-National Company and owned a
duplex apartment floor in Juhu, facing the Arabic Sea. He drove a BMW 7, was a
member of two elite clubs and was recently divorced, free from his nagging wife
after eleven years of arranged marriage. Arranged marriage never worked for Sam, and right now, he was happy living the life of the most eligible bachelor, and
he felt delighted and released and the way his life was shaping up, there was
nothing to complain about; he felt the urge to do more in this bustling
mega-city of Mumbai. He had plans, great plans!
In
the next five years, Sam plans to quit his Vice President Job and become his
boss. Things were proceeding smoothly. There were talks about starting a chain
of fast-food restaurants or yoga centres, and everything was going according to
his plans. Then, one day, Sam came down with a high fever and, for a week, lay
in the hospital under the observation of Doctor Ram Russell.
A
week later, Sam was back in good health, and things were back to normal. It was
the day he was going to be discharged from the hospital when Doctor Ram Russell
came to his room to check him out.
“Ah,
the fever is gone and your health report chart says everything is normal and
there is no problem at all.” Doctor Russell said, smiling at Sam while reading
the report.
“Thank
God,” Sam said with a smile.
“And
modern science,” Doctor Russell said, chuckling.
“You
bet, Doc,” Sam said.
“So
how are you feeling now?” Doctor Russell asked.
“Absolutely
great and ready to go,” Sam replied.
“Good,
but take it easy for few days.” Doctor Russell said.
Sam
nodded and was discharged, but as soon as he drove his car towards his house, he
felt a throbbing pain between his eyes. For a minute, he thought to drive back
to Doctor Russell and tell him about the pain in his eyes, but then, thinking
that perhaps some other time, he drove home.
Three
days later, Sam was back to his good health and enjoyed himself with all the
attention he was getting at the party that was thrown by his best friend Alan
Mark, especially for him. The party went on until late hours, and by the time
Sam drove home, it was already early 3:15 am in the morning.
The
next morning, Sam sat up on his bed and cried out as the pain in his eyes came
back again and this time with an intensity. He blinked his eyes open and then
shut. The pain has ebbed to a dull throbbing now, and two steam lines of tears
run down his face.
“Something
is terribly wrong with my eyes,” Sam said aloud, staring into the dressing room
mirror as he dressed himself. Then, looking at the mirror, he blinked his eyes
twice and walked out of the room, missing the newly cracked ones that had
appeared on the dressing table mirror.
